Rio de Janeiro's best-known landmark is the rock peak of Sugarloaf, towering 394 meters above the harbor. It sits on a point of land that projects out into the bay and wraps around its harbor, and is connected to the city by a low strip of land. 

You can take a cable car from Praça General Tibúrcio to the top of the Morro da Urca, a lower peak from which a second cableway runs to the summit of the Sugarloaf.

 From here, you can see the entire mountainous coast that rings the bay and its islands. Below, the 100-meter Praia da Urca beach is near the location of Rio's original nucleus, between the Morro Cara de Cão and the Sugarloaf.

 On Cara, de Cão are three forts of which the 16th-century, star-shaped Fort São João is open to the public.

A cable car runs from its summit to the adjacent Urca Hill, near the foot of which is the site of the Praia Vermelha Campus of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

The Phi Phi Islands are one of Thailand's most popular resort areas for a reason—the clear blue waters, the soft sand, the breathtaking views that go on forever.

You can reach Phi Phi Don—the largest of the islands and the only one permanently inhabited—on a rented kayak or by hiring a small wooden boat to take you here.

Phi Phi Don was one of the areas hit hard by the 2004 tsunami—but since then, guesthouses, restaurants, and markets have been rebuilt, and crowds still come in droves to the resort island.

There is a small, somber memorial park to honor those who died in the tragedy, but the resort areas are otherwise revived and looking as beautiful as ever.

By Road: Traveling to Hikkaduwa by taxi is by far the most expensive yet the most luxurious medium of travel. Apart from the taxis, the minibusses are also available to ferry larger groups of people to Hikkaduwa. You can board these taxis and minibusses at the Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport.
